Nehemiah 8:1-18 — How God’s Word Revives Us

In this message, Pastor Kevin presents the first of several messages from Nehemiah 8-13 on the topic of revival. In this first message, from Nehemiah 8, he reminds us of what revival is and who God revives. From the chapter, Pastor Kevin presents 5 things that happen when God revives His people.
Below is an outline to help you follow along with the message.

The Story of the Book of Nehemiah

    • Ezra is about the rebuilding of the TEMPLE.
    • Nehemiah is about the rebuilding of the WALL.

The Structure of the Book of Nehemiah

    • Chapters 1-6 … The REBUILDING of the wall.
    • Chapter 7 … A PIVOTAL chapter.
    • Chapters 8-13 … The REVIVAL of God’s people.

LESSON GOD’S WORD REVIVES US (Nehemiah 8:1-18)

I. REVIVAL MEANS THERE IS A REVIVED APPETITE FOR THE SCRIPTURES (v. 1-5).

II. REVIVAL MEANS THERE IS A DEEP REVERENCE TOWARD THE GOD OF SCRIPTURE (v. 6).

III. REVIVAL MEANS THERE IS A RADICAL APPLICATION OF BIBLICAL TRUTH (v. 7-8, 13).

  • “explained the Law to the people …”  (v. 7) – This was so they would be ACCURATE with the Word.
  • “… so that they understood the reading”  (v. 8) – This was so they would be CLEAR about the Word.
  • … that they might gain insight into the words of the Law”  (v. 13) – This was so they would APPLY  the Word.

IV. REVIVAL MEANS THERE IS TRUE REPENTANCE OVER SIN (v. 9-12).

V. REVIVAL MEANS THERE IS A RESPONSE OF JOY IN GOD (v. 13-18).
